4th Symposium in Rome Parishes and the New Evangelisation The Contribution of Ecclesial Movements and New Communities Organized by the Emmanuel Community in collaboration with the Pontifical Redemptor Hominis Institute Rome, 30 January to 1 February, 2008
Presentation of the Symposium This 4th Symposium in Rome, organised in collaboration with the Pontifical Redemptor Hominis Institute, continues the work of the preceding conferences. After working, in 2004, on the contribution of new communities and ecclesial movements in the life and mission of the Church and, in 2006, on the need to evangelise in our post-modern world, the 4th Symposium will deal with the role of parishes in the New Evangelisation.
This question is important for the future of the Church. The missionary dynamism of most movements and new communities is well-known. However, such dynamism is insufficient if it is not accompanied – or sometimes preceded - by a similar dynamism in parishes.
Canon law defines the parish as a community of the faithful under the authority of a Shepherd . In Christifideles laici, John Paul II completes this definition: “The parish is not principally a structure, a territory, or a building, but rather, ‘the family of God, a fellowship afire with a unifying spirit’, ‘a familial and welcoming home’ the ‘community of the faithful’. Plainly and simply, the parish is founded on a theological reality, because it is a Eucharistic community. First as a community of the life of the Church and a familial and welcoming home, the parish should also be the source of missionary life which constitutes the essence of the Church.
Evangelisation in a parish has many advantages. The parish represents the ordinary visibility of the Church. This is what the Reverend Nicky Gumbel, head of Alpha International, meant in 2006 when he said, “You get what you see”. In other words, you are invited to enter the community which has evangelised you. You know that this community is “the Church in this place”. The assimilation of the new faithful is thus made, in the best possible manner, through proximity and ecclesiality. However evangelisation in parishes also raises many questions. During this symposium we will reflect on some of them: - What is the missionary nature of the parish? Should it primarily devote itself to the faithful who already take part in its activities? Or, on the contrary, should it make a major investment in people who have not yet come? - What are the historical lessons in this field? How have parishes contributed to the spread of the Good News in the past? What are the lessons to be drawn for today? - How can parishes accommodate the dynamism of ecclesial movements and new communities, while respecting their particular charisms? - What does canon law teach us about parishes? Is the parish the only possibility for mission within a territory? What other possibilities are open, for example, through ecclesial movements and new communities? - What could be the place of the sacraments in parish missionary dynamics? How can one benefit from this opportunity in order to reach those who stop on the threshold of the Church? - What place can the laity occupy in the pastoral missionary aspect of parish life? Consequently, how can one describe the link between priests and lay people in the parish apostolate? - What formation should be given to future priests to help them become missionary priests? - The situation of our parishes changes. How can a Christian parish evolve into a missionary parish? - As we have seen, the questions are many. The symposium proposes to deal with them using a methodology differing from that used in the previous meetings.
Methodology For this 4th Symposium in Rome, the organisers would like to suggest a more interactive methodology based on three broad axes:
- Four presentations from specialists, to help participants identify the main challenges of the questions. Each presentation is followed by a time of debate.
- Two short testimonies each day, presenting original experiences in parish evangelisation. It does seem important to nourish the reflection of participants with examples, clarifying debate and inspiring future action.
- Each day, we propose to cover two major subjects using a completely interactive format, in the following stages:
• A speaker is given the task of introducing a subject. He prepares a written text which will be published in the symposium proceedings. All the participants in the conference will receive his text and be able to familiarise themselves with it prior to the Symposium. This exempts the speaker from reading out his text.
• The speaker has 15 minutes to present the broad outlines of his work. He may give a noteworthy example or underline one particularly enlightening argument.
• A respondent will then suggest objections or points needing explanation. He also will invite the audience, for each point or objection raised, to give their reactions. The objective is to contribute to a development of the positions expressed and to allow a constructive debate with the participation of all.
